06/11/2008

On Sunday, 2nd, November, 2008, SCHS's School for the Intellectually Disabled has organized a lecture in Sharjah Maternity Center as part of its annual campaign about mental disability. The lecture, which targeted pregnant women and mothers of infants, talked about the proper way to deal with mentally disabled child.

Lecturers were Eman Khlfahn, educational supervisor at SCHS's School for the Intellectually Disabled, Dr. Majida Dajani, head of Mothers' Board, vice president of Mothers' Board, head of activities departments, and the treasury.

The lecture identified the main symptoms and signs of a mentally disabled child such as slow physical growth in general, low IQ, articulation disorders, inappropriate response for events, lack of control over elimination process, bad eye coordination, and slow reflexes.

Dr. Majida Dajani pointed out that the main purpose of this lecture is to introduce a mentally disabled person as a human being after all. Therefore, he should be respected for that. People should avoid stereotypes, rumors, or any rusty traditions when dealing with a mentally disabled person.

One of the mothers by the name Ula Mi'mary highly appreciated SCHS's School for the Intellectually Disabled campaign about mental disability, which is organized annually. The lecture helped her to identify the proper way when dealing with mentally disabled persons. They are an important part of our society that is not separable.

At the first day of this campaign, which started on Saturday, 1st, November, 2008, SCHS's School for the Intellectually Disabled organized an opened day in Al Falaj Park that targeted the residents of that area in order to inform them about mental disability. A sketch entitled 'listen carefully' that contained useful information about mental disability and disabled people was preformed in front of the audience.

SCHS's School for the Intellectually Disabled students participated park visitors in various activities such as painting workshops, handicrafts, and entertaining contests. This has proved that mental disabled people are capable of integrating with normal people under any circumstances.

The activity also included a doll play that talked about the importance of accepting mentally disabled persons by the society with an outstanding participation from Parents' Board. In addition, the student Mumin (not disabled) honored the student Mohammed Khalfahn for helping him memorizing some chapters from the holy Koran.

On Thursday, 5th, November, 2008, another activity is going to be organized in the residential park 'Al Ghafia' as part of SCHS's School for the Intellectually Disabled campaign about mental disability.

SCHS's School for the Intellectually Disabled had organized a lecture ahead of its campaign about mental disability entitled 'how to deal with a disabled person' in Sharjah Cultural Palace by Samia Mohammed Salih the educational supervisor at SCHS's School for the Intellectually Disabled. The lecture targeted Sharjah preparatory female schools. The attendants reached more than 400 students in two days.

The lecturer identified mental disability by a noticeable low level of mind capabilities that affects behavior during growing up time. She assured that the mentally disabled person can learn if we used proper techniques and methods. He should receive a respectful treatment as normal people.
