Under the patronage of Ministry of Culture & Youths and the General Assembly of Youths & Sports, Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services organized the summer camp for the disabled & their siblings, which started on Sunday, 28th, June, 2009. The camp will last until 6th, August, 2009.The camp has many objectives. First, it will enhance the confidence of disabled students. Second, they will get the chance to fill their spare time with something useful. Third, the camp will allow disabled students to mingle with ordinary students in complete harmony. Four, campers will learn new skills. Fifth, campers will receive consultation and instructions to make them independent and more respectful to others. Sixth, students with severe disabilities will participate in the camp. Seventh, the organizers will try to discover students' talents and refine it.
The camp is six weeks long. Each week has a theme. Each theme has certain activities that emphasis it in the minds of children. These activities aim at making the theme a habitual practice for campers.
The themes are integration & communication (1st, week), I belong to my environment (2nd, week), good manners (3rd, week), innovation and superiority (4th, week), my health is my responsibility (5th, week), and traditional identity (the last week).
The second and the last week's themes were chosen by Ministry of Culture & Youths and the General Assembly of Youths & Sports. The other themes were chosen by Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services in accordions with the needs and interests of participants.
The first day of the camp was dedicated to finalize registration, meet parents, and divide campers on the different sections of the camp according to their capabilities and hobbies. These divisions were made to fit scheduled activities. These activities are swimming, riding; trips, and porcelain workshops, etc. buses will collect campers from their homes. In addition, there was a reception with entertaining activities to introduce children to each other.
The following day activities included two sessions of swimming for 24 boys at the Arabian Cultural Club under the supervision of four teachers and two lifeguards and 16 girls at Al Khalidia Center for Youths.
On Tuesday, the 45 campers went on a journey to Safeer Mall. They were accompanied by nine supervisors and eight volunteers. Children spend a very nice day playing with games inside the mall. The program, which was prepared ahead of time, is the secret behind the success of this journey.
