bullet The head of Special Education Faculty in Al Mustansiriyah University visits SCHS

On Thursday, 19th, February, 2009, Her Highness Shaikha Jameela Bint Mohammed Al Qasimmi, vice president of Sharjah Family Supreme Council, general director of SCHS, received at her office Dr. Hanah Rajip Hassin, the head of Special Education Faculty in Al Mustansiriyah University in Baghdad, member of Scientific Committee at Arab Network for Autism.

The meeting discussed a number of objectives such as exchanging experience between SCHS and the university; motivating teachers and specialists of Al Mustansiriyah University to visit SCHS in order to fulfill the first objective; and gathering all the tests for Autism people from Arab Network for Autism in order to use it for diagnosing new patients.

The main purpose of this visit is to take a closer look at the various activities and programs that SCHS provide for people with special needs. In addition, Dr. Hanah Rajip Hassin gave her highness a present. It is the book she has written along with Dr. Eman Abaas about autism.

The book talks about learning difficulties, which is considered a new topic for specialists, who usually focus on other disabilities such as physical inabilities like deafness and blindness. On the other hand, a group of children with no disability, yet suffering from learning difficulties occurred lately. Therefore, specialists have taken concern in studying those children in order to identify the main characteristics of these difficulties.

The first chapter of the book talks about the history of learning difficulties; the meaning of this term; and the terminology used to describe it. The second chapter talks about the characteristics, causes, classifications, its prevalence, and the relation between it and academic process.

The third chapter discusses neurology, its history, learning difficulties, the nervous system autopsy, and its injuries. The fourth chapter talks about the various theories which explain learning difficulties such as Awareness & motion, Newell C. Kephart, and Doman & Delakato, etc.

The fifth chapter discusses in chronological order the various researches and books, which talked about learning difficulties. The sixth chapter discusses the various means and tests used in relation to the learning difficulties such as clinical observation, case study, limited tests, social adjusting tests, and scanning tests. The seventh chapter discusses the various strategies used in teaching students with learning difficulties such as the strategy of training which is based on the 5 senses and other strategies.

The eighth chapter discusses the role of parents in assisting their children who suffer from learning difficulties. This role consists on positive reaction, early intervention, and training. The ninth chapter discusses the role of schools in providing help for students with learning difficulties. The tenth chapter discusses the various programs used to deal with student with learning difficulties such as Educational Games and Special Individual programs. The eleventh chapter contains fifteen activities to teach students with learning difficulties in order to help teachers deal with such students.

Dr. Hanah Rajip Hassin toured the different departments and sections of SCHS. She visited the Center for Early Intervention, Al Amal Kindergarten & School for the Deaf, the School for the Intellectually Disabled, and Vocational Rehabilitation & Training Department. At the end of her visit she said: "SCHS is the best example for those who want to serve people with special needs".
