10/02/2009

On Monday, 9th, February, 2009, SCHS's School for the Intellectually Disabled organized a lecture under the title 'how to deal with disability and the disabled child' at Women Union in Sharjah as part of school's 3rd campaign of mental disability. The lecture, which targeted students of Sharjah & Ajman educational zone schools, was given by Mrs. Samia Mohammed, school's educational supervisor. Mrs. Samia Mohammed, school's educational supervisor started the lecture by saying that mental disability means a noticeable deficiency in learning capabilities joined with problematic adjusting behavior that occur at an early age. Nevertheless, a mentally disabled person can learn if he receives a proper education. He should be taught with a lot of patience and respect.

She mentioned many characteristics of mental disabilities such as: slowness body growth; low IQ; verbal problems; lack of interests; lack of proper reasoning in case of danger; slow reflexes; lack of control over excretion; motion disorder; improper eye contact; and low passivity. However, they have a high sense of taste that enabled them to interact positively with stimulation.

Mrs. Samia Mohammed has also mentioned some fundamentals when dealing with mentally disabled person. Consequently, we should build his self esteem; pay attention to his psychological status; motivate him to socialize more with the community; help him to use his spare time in something useful; and set up an exemplary behavior in front of him because he learns from others by imitation.

Finally, a documentary was displayed about the various activities and training services that students receive at the school. It has the greatest influence on the minds of none-disabled people. They've changed their attitude towards mentally disabled persons. This was discovered by filling a questionnaire before the lecture and filling another after the lecture. A discussion was opened between students and the lecturer in an interactive atmosphere.
