bullet white cane day

16/10/2008

On Wednesday, 15th, October, 2008, SCHS's Center for Early Intervention organized a campaign to spread awareness about blindness and the white Kane in governmental schools. This campaign corresponds to the International Day for the White Kane in 15th, October. Mrs. Hiba Abed Kareem, a teacher, Mrs. Shireen Almi, a treasury, and Mrs. Marym Tinaji, a volunteer participated in this campaign. It included two schools Eshbelyah Primary School & Marym Primary School for girls.

The campaign started with a lecture by Mrs. Hiba Abed Kareem about blindness. She identified the blind person by the one who cannot read or write except in Brielle, while the partially blind person is the one who can read and write with aiding tools such as larger fonts and glasses.

Then, she mentioned the main tools used by the blind such as Brielle typing machine, the sense of touching and its exercises, and the White Kane that is called like that because of its color, which resembles a blind person. Blind people have the right to attend public places with their Kane and dogs to lead them around buildings, offices, and restaurants.

After that, the teacher asked the students to cover up their eyes in order to experience blindness for temporarily short period of time and to feel with blind people when they move around. It is necessary for the students to know how to deal with blind people in certain situations.

Then, the journalist Mr. Hazim Shihata gave a simplified explanation about Al Manal magazine, which is concerned with focusing light on the problems and issues of people with special needs inside United Arab Emirates and the Arabian world. The magazine is headed by Her Highness Shaikha Jameela Bint Mohammed Al Qasimmi, general director of SCHS. Mr. Osama Mardini is the chief editor.

Al Manal magazine is distinguished by its ability to express the problems and issues of people with special needs with objectivity not only in United Arab Emirates but also in the Arab world. It is considered a reliable source of information when it comes to news and issues of people with special needs.

Mrs. Ay'sha Salam, Eshbelyah Primary School principal, deeply thanked Her Highness Shaikha Jameela Bint Mohammed Al Qasimmi and the workers of SCHS for their enormous efforts in providing better services for people with special needs.

Finally, SCHS's Center for Early Intervention has prepared a program to celebrate the International Day of the White Kane, which includes hosting Mr. Jalal Kamil, an optician, to speak about eyes diseases and to answer parents' questions about blindness. In addition, he will demonstrate a case study. It will be opened for discussion in order to benefit more from mutual experiences.
