On Sunday, 27th, September 2009, SCHS's Center for Early Intervention organized an informative lecture entitled "Precautious procedures against Swine Flu" by Dr. Nabiel Solaiman, head of family health and behavioral sciences department at Sharjah University. Many teachers, specialists, and supervisors of SCHS attended the lecture. Dr. Nabiel started the lecture by speaking about the hazards of normal flu, which many people usually underestimate. He assured that it causes thousands of deaths each year in addition to its catastrophic effects on the society and economics around the world. The number of deaths in United States of America only reached more than 35 thousand in addition to a 10 billion losses.
Then, Dr. Nabiel started to speak about the current epidemic H1N1 (Swine Flu) and its hazards on small children in general and on people with disabilities in particular. Disability may cause weakness in the immunity system. Therefore, it is very important to take the necessary measures at homes, schools, and public places because the virus spreads so fast.
When symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and headache occurs parents should not send their child to school. Instead, they should take him to see a doctor. Treating the disease in its early stages with effective medicines such as TAMIFLO leads to a complete recovery. These medicines can be found in all health centers around United Arab Emirates.
It is necessary to keep 1-meter distance between you and an infected person. We should wash our hands properly with soap and water. We should clean any surface that the virus might land on such as tables, fabric, and doors handles. This will reduced the possibility of being infected said Dr. Nabiel.
Teachers and supervisors should be alert at all times in case one of the students shows symptoms of H1N1. Then, parents should be notified in order to take their child to medical examination. The child must remain in quarantine for seven days until the symptoms disappear.
Dr. Nabiel concluded his lecture by being optimistic because in two days people in Australia will receive vaccination. The vaccine will be available at United Arab Emirates by the end of October. The epidemic will be eliminated for good.
