bullet A lecture by Lamis Khaliel in Al Amal School for the Deaf

11/10/2009

On Tuesday, 6 October 2009, Sharjah city for humanitarian services organized a lecture entitled (Early discovery of breast cancer) in Al Amal School for the Deaf. Lamis Khaliel, Obstetrician-Gynecologist gave the lecture. A number of teachers, supervisors, and trainers attended the lecture.

The lecturer started by speaking about the different parts of a breast and the diseases involved such as cancer. Women are more likely to have breast cancer after the age of 50. However, this is not a fixed standard. Younger girls can have cancer as well. Therefore, early discovery is a basic element for recovery.

It is very important for women to do self-examination for breast once a month. In case there is something suspicious, women should see a doctor immediately. The doctor will apply mammogram test, which is available free of charge at health centers.

A breast cancer patient may not show any symptoms until later stages. Then, it will be too late for action. These symptoms are strange excretion from the nipple, a tumor inside the breast or under the shoulders. If any women experienced such symptoms, she should see a doctor for a full check up.

Women are more likely to have breast cancer than men because of Estrogen Hormone. Men are rarely infected with this illness. The ratio is 1%. SCHS's social worker said that the main purpose of organizing this lecture is to inform female workers and the mothers of students with disabilities about the hazards of this disease.

SCHS will organize a number of lectures during the first semester about Osteoporosis, breast-feeding, and balanced nutrition. It will also organize some lectures about diabetic patients.
