bullet An Outstanding Participation for SCHS in The First National Conference about Autism in Yemen

22/04/2009

Her Highness Shaikha Jameela Bint Mohammed Al Qasimmi, vice president of Family Supreme Council & General Director of SCHS, announced the beginning of a project to formulate a trust fund in order to support the institutions working in the filed of disability in UAE and Yemen. The decision was taken after Her Highness headed the delegation, which participated in The First National Conference about Autism in Yemen, which was organized by Yemeni Center for Autism. The conference was held under the patronage of Yemeni president Mr. Ali Abdullah Salih and with outstanding participation from Arab and foreign countries. The delegation included Mrs. Mona Bagh, head of Sharjah Center for Autism, Mrs. Khadeja Bamakhramah, personal assistant of H.H Shaikha Jameela, Mrs. Amnah Ebraheem, head of SCHS's Daid branch, and the articulation therapist Mr. Majed Sami.

During the conference, the delegation had the chance to meet a selection of workers in the filed of special education, social work, and number of academics working in the Yemeni universities. This has allowed the exchange of scientific experiences in the field of disability and social development. Furthermore, the delegation took a closer look at some of the institutions that rehabilitate people with special needs in Yemen. Futuristic plans of cooperation were made between the two countries.

During their visit to Yemen, the delegation had touched some aspects that could be subjected for further work. Some advantages must be emphasized. On the other hand, disadvantages must be treated with great care and attention. H.H Shaikha Jameela admired very much the role of the Yemeni women, who work in silence and complete devotion to serve their country in spite of the bad circumstances.

SCHS will do its best in order to help the Yemeni institutions by organizing oriented training programs, which will help develop their expertise in relation to providing services for people with special needs.

The conference concluded with some recommendations such as using propaganda in order to introduce the public to autism disability, doing researches to study this disorder, providing vocational and social rehabilitation for autism children, develop their skills to the extreme, providing training courses for the worker of these institutions, and formulating a committee to coordinate with other institutions inside Yemen. This committee should evaluate the needs of these institutions and unify their programs.

The conference discussed some study cases on autism, early intervention, and the best ways to deal with an autism child. Sharjah Center for Autism presented a case study entitled 'alternate supportive ways of communication' by Mr. Majed Sami. The study talks about the different ways to develop lingual skills for autism children.

The delegation visited many institutions working in providing services for people with special needs in Yemen. During these visits, the delegation took a closer look at working techniques followed in these institutions. In addition, the delegation gave an explanation about working techniques applied in SCHS as part of exchanging experiences and preparing for mutual futuristic cooperation.

The conference managed to introduce the public in Yemen to autism disability successfully especially, for specialists who are unaware of the precise symptoms of autism. This is directly reflected on the society which has many cases of autism.

The main purpose of SCHS's participation in the conference is to exchange experiences with the institutions there and to discuss the case studies presented in order to reach common solutions for this disability. There is no cure for this disability. Specialists only try to improve the condition by training and rehabilitation.
