bullet A Delegation Headed by Her Highness Shaikha Jameela Participated in Two Meetings at Kuwait

Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services participated in the 10th, meeting of Gulf Association for Autism and the 3rd, meeting of Arabian Network for Autism ANA, which took place in Kuwait from 6 to 9 October 2009. Her Highness Shaikha Jameela Bint Mohammed Al Qasimmi and Mrs. Mona Abed Kareem represented SCHS.

Her Highness Shaikha Fahdah Bint Abed Aziz from Saudi Arabia, Shaikha Samira Al Qassimi from Qatar, Mrs. Farida Moaied from Bahrain, Mrs. Farida Kindey from Oman, and Shaikhah Sbahee from Kuwait attended the two meetings.

The first meeting accounted for the ninth meeting of the organization, which took place in Qatar on 13th May 2009, The 4th, Gulf Championship for Autistic People, assigned tasks for members, case study of the autism status in gulf countries in order to improve services and diagnosis protocol and adjusting association's regulations until they receive a reply from Gulf Council. The meeting also decided to establish a database, printing one poster for the association, developing and improving its website, and approving the next meeting in Jidah Saudi Arabia.

Her Highness Shaikha Jameela Bint Mohammed Al Qasimmi has pointed out that cooperation is continuous with the members of the association, yet the ambition is still more than what has been accomplished.

Her Highness Shaikha Jameela Bint Mohammed Al Qasimmi has suggested translating number of books in relation to autism such as The Standards of Diagnostic Observation for Autism, Clinical Diagnosis of Autism, Autism Encyclopedia, and Treating and Educating autistic people.

Gulf Association for Autism was established in Kuwait 2002 by a suggestion from Dr. Sameera Said. Many representatives of gulf countries participated in the first meeting. Then meetings continued in an annual basis moving along member countries. Dr. Sameera Said assured that the association is working since its establishment to coordinate with various centers of special needs in gulf countries in order to improve the quality of services provided for people with special needs.

In addition, the association is working to establish a full database that contains the number of autistic people in gulf countries. It is also working on a protocol on diagnosis. The association is trying to provide information about autism by printing books, posters, and brochures. The association is also aiming at improving the skills of academic staff that are working in the field of special education by organizing lectures and conferences in relation.

The association has succeeded to achieve a number of objectives such as: initiating the Arab Day for Autism on 4th, April, which has been approved by United Nations to be an informative activities day about autism. It has adapted three major tests for autism and trained specialists on how to use them, cooperated in selecting publications with gulf countries, and coordinated with lecturers in order to organize effective courses about autism.

Her Highness Shaikha Fahdah Bint Abed Aziz from Saudi Arabia said: "I wish in this meeting to have a common ground to work on in order to fulfill our dreams of helping autistic people with all means possible".

In relation to the third meeting of Arabian Network for Autism ANA, which took place in Kuwaiti Center for Autism, participants stated that the initiation of the network is in its final stages. They have also discussed the formulation of a medical committee along with the current scientific committee. They have proposed finalizing a 5 year plan with precise schedule.

The ANA was established in Lebanon. It aims at supporting people with autistic disorders and claiming their rights. It aims at integrating the disabled into the society, exchange experiences among Arab countries, encourage research on the matter, and providing the latest news and updates about autism in Arabic language.

The network is consisted of two assemblies. The first assembly is the administrative one. The second one is the general assembly. Applicants for membership should have their civil rights in full, should not be convicted in shameful crimes, and should agree to the network system of organization.
